Every Body Knows (1975)

Concept and creative process

‘Every Body Knows’ was a series about understanding our minds and bodies and practising activities to relieve the tensions of daily life. Pauline Carter created her title sequence of contemplative mandalas for it on a revolving rostrum camera table with back-lit artwork, consisting of clear circular patterns on black, coloured with gels. To create the animated mandalas two or three separate camera passes were required, each with the pattern rotating alternately in opposite directions, and with the camera tracking vertically out of the centre of each revolving pattern. The last animating mandala was held revolving in the centre of the screen and was finally framed by the ‘O’ in ‘BODY’, as the programme logo tracked back to its final position. It was a beautiful solution putting the viewer in the right frame of mind to view the following programme.
