Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1980)

Concept and creative process

‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ was a classic BBC adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s exploration into the good and evil sides of human nature. Dick Bailey’s titles took as their starting point a flat distorted image of Dr Jekyll rotating around a curved mirror which reflected back an undistorted image of the doctor to camera, a phenomenon known for many centuries as mirror anamorphosis. It was a powerful image that perfectly reflected the split personality of Dr Jekyll. The remainder of the titles in the sequence were placed over live action panning shots of objects in Dr Jekyll’s study.
