In at the Deep End (1984)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a series of films in which Chris Serle and Paul Heiney take it in turns to plunge in at the deep end and learn the hard way about a completely new skill. Designer Darrell Pockett took his cue from the programme name and made reflections his theme for the sequence. He created half-a-dozen cards portraying the two presenters in different roles and made them disappear beneath the surface of the water, creating interesting rippling reflections in the process. Glimpses of the series title logo were similarly seen reflected in the surface, until finally seen complete over the water at the end, before also sinking into the deep. The material, when edited to the title music, created a very satisfying opener for the programme. The filmed sequence was achieved using a model-mover and a tank of water.
