Brotherly Love (2000)

Concept and creative process

BBC Scotland in Glasgow commissioned the BBC Resources broadcast design team in London to produce the title sequence and programme kit of parts for the gentle comedy series ‘Brotherly Love’ set in Argyll in Scotland. When Frank Robertson, played by James Fleet, inherits his late uncle's pub, he moves back to the village of Invercorrie where his bachelor brother Hector, played by Gregor Fisher is the town's doctor.
The key clients at BBC Scotland were Tony Humphreys and Bernard McKenna. Designer Gregory Millar was supported by senior designer Jane Fielder and design producer Janet Smith.
The creative response was to use a mother hen awaiting the arrival of her chicks while specially shot footage of Inveraray and Loch Fyne – the location used for Invercorrie - is projected onto the surface of the egg shells. Eventually the eggs begin to crack and two little chicks appear - a yellow chick represents Frank while the other chick is blue for Hector. The ‘Brotherly Love’ logo animates on.
The sequence was edited and post-produced in-house at BBC TV Centre in London.
