Blue Peter (1999)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for ‘Blue Peter’, a children's television series that was first broadcast in 1958 and is currently still going strong, making it the longest-running children's show in the history of television. Designed in-house by Kevin Hill, this title sequence ran from 1999 to 2004. The brief was to make the show feel more contemporary. The producers knew that the programme was incredibly popular but not many kids would admit to watching it, so the aim was to create something that felt of the time. Kevin Hill referenced contemporary pop-culture, giving the presenters a “hero” role in travelling and adventuring through the seascape, guided along by the ‘Blue Peter’ ships, floating inside bubbles. One stipulation of the producers was that Tony Hart's original ship logo was not to be altered. So Kevin Hill designed a new stylised vessel and placed Hart’s emblem on its hull. Kevin Hill actually drew the new ship initially on a napkin in the BBC Canteen for 3D animator Andy McNamara to work with.
