Honouring legacy in action: Students celebrate Black History Month
Black History Month is a time to reflect on heritage, champion representation, and celebrate the creative energy driving modern Black culture forward. At Ravensbourne University London, empowering diverse voices and challenging conventions are central to who we are.
Our Afro-Caribbean Society (ACS) plays a vital role in building community, providing a space where students connect, share experiences, and collaborate across creative disciplines.
Two of our students reflect on what Black History Month means to them and how their creative journeys intersect with their heritage.

'To me, Black History Month is about remembering where I come from, while recognising where I can go. As a young Ivorian living in the UK, it reminds me that Black history isn't just about the struggles of the past, but also about the excellence, creativity, and opportunities we're building today.
As a photographer and someone passionate about business and creativity, I believe representation matters. I want to tell stories, celebrate our culture, and show that our generation has the power to create its own legacy.
For me, Black History Month isn't just about celebrating those who made history. It's also about inspiring us to become part of that history.'

'To me, Black History Month is looking back on and celebrating Black ancestors and others who stood in solidarity to fight injustice and stand for what’s right. It’s a month to look back on stories and leaders whose experiences and fight were never told, yet helped shape the life of Black people today.
My biggest ACS highlight would have to be the first meeting where we played games and had to dress up for the event.'
