Built for Industry: Cansu Bal

Publication date:

Ravensbourne University London celebrates alumna Cansu Bal, who has officially been named in MIX Interiors’ prestigious 30 Under 30 list.

Graduating in 2017 with a degree in BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Reuse (formerly Interior Environment Design), Cansu has steadily built an impressive career trajectory. Today, working as a Senior Designer crafting high-profile commercial spaces, she joins an elite group of young creatives recognised by MIX Interiors - a leading sector publication shaping the future of commercial design.

We caught up with Cansu to discuss her industry milestone, her approach to design, and her advice for the next generation of creative talent.

Cansu quote

What does being named in the MIX Interiors 30 Under 30 list mean to you at this stage of your career?

"I feel incredibly honoured to be recognised by MIX Interiors, especially as it is such a well-respected name within the industry. To be selected alongside so many talented designers is a huge achievement and something I am genuinely proud of.

At this stage in my career, it feels like a real milestone. Looking back at the journey from starting out as a junior to now working as a senior designer on high-profile commercial projects, it feels like a recognition of how far I have come, as well as all the learning along the way.

For me, it is also a reminder to keep pushing myself, stay curious, and remain open to new opportunities. Being recognised at this point is deeply motivating and gives me even more drive for what comes next."

Could you share an overview of what you are working on now and how your design approach shapes commercial spaces?

"I am currently delivering workplace projects across the technology, business, and legal sectors. Each client has a distinct identity, culture, and way of working, which brings a unique perspective to every brief.

My approach always begins with the people who will use the space. I consider how people move through a building, how a space functions, and how they should feel when experiencing it - from the initial arrival to daily interactions.

Alongside the user experience, I focus on translating a client's brand values into physical environments. Everything from materials and colour palettes to furniture and lighting is carefully considered. Good commercial design is about balancing functionality, aesthetics, and identity to create spaces that work seamlessly for the people inside them."

How did your time studying Interior Architecture and Reuse at Ravensbourne prepare you for the industry?

"Studying at Ravensbourne broadened the way I think about design. Having architecture and interior design taught together helped me understand how the two disciplines connect and how architectural scale influences interior spaces.

The course gave me the freedom to work across diverse briefs, helping me build adaptability and confidence. Experiences like participating in the World Architecture Festival also provided valuable exposure to the wider design industry, establishing a strong foundation to explore fresh approaches."

What is the best piece of advice you have received, and what would you pass on to current students?

"One of the best pieces of advice I received during my studies was simply to believe in myself. My course leader at Ravensbourne encouraged me to trust my ideas and pushed me to achieve my best. Later, a director I worked with shared similar guidance: talent, combined with a strong work ethic and a positive attitude, will take you far.

To current students: believe in your abilities, stay open to learning, and do not be afraid to back yourself. You never stop learning in this industry, so stay curious, take every opportunity you can, and keep pushing yourself to grow."

Congratulations to Cansu Bal on this well-deserved industry recognition! We look forward to seeing her continue to shape the future of commercial architecture and interior design. To read more about the BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Reuse course, click here.
