Ravensbourne hosts first alumni networking BBQ event

Publication date:

Ravensbourne University recently hosted an inaugural Industry Leaders Alumni BBQ - an evening designed to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of its alumni community while forging stronger, more personal relationships with them. Bringing together a select cohort of alumni who have risen to leadership across various creative sectors, the event focused on identifying shared interests, celebrating industry impact, and exploring exciting opportunities for future collaboration.

Among the attendees was Andrew Morgan, a 2013 Digital Photography graduate who co-founded Gripvan, a company providing specialist equipment and logistics services for high-end stills and commercial moving image shoots across the UK. Reflecting on his time as part of the course’s first cohort, Andrew noted how the independence expected of students at Ravensbourne prepared him for the realities of running a business:

When asked what wisdom he would share with current students navigating the start of their careers, Andrew offered a proactive approach: "Say yes to any opportunities you're offered. And if you're not offered the opportunities, ask for them. And if no one responds to that, make the opportunities for yourself."

The evening also provided an ideal backdrop to hear from Lawrence Lartey, the newly appointed Director of Ravensbourne Studios. Describing his first few months in the role as "hectic, exciting, and challenging," Lawrence highlighted the central mission of the gathering:

Looking ahead, Lawrence shared his ambitious plans to expand the studio's portfolio beyond student insight projects into broadcast, creative concepts, and full-scale campaigns.

Adding an international perspective to the gathering was Helen Stergios, Head of Brand Experience (Digital and Social) for Nike EMEA’s in-house brand creative team in Amsterdam. Recalling her time at Ravensbourne 25 years ago - during the era of Web 1.0—she credited her experience at the university with teaching her how to experiment freely and collaborate across disciplines. Her work now spans spatial design, UX, and large-scale sports activations.

For students aiming to break into experience design or global brand strategy, Helen emphasised character and curiosity over sheer technical skill:
