Biography

Currently the Course Leader of the new MSc Events Management at Ravensbourne University, Julia previously held positions at UCA and Middlesex University. As UCA's Programme Director for Cultural Business and Management, she was responsible for the BA courses in Events Management, Business and Management and Music Business, and for the MA Music Management.

Prior to academia, Julia worked in the music and cultural events sector. As Managing Director of the artist management company Haferkorn Associates Ltd and Co-Founder/Director of the events production company Third Ear Music, she curated, planned and delivered music and cultural events all over the UK and internationally.

Other posts include Stage Director of London’s Chinese New Year celebrations on Trafalgar Square (2015-19 & 2023-24) and Artistic Director of the British Composer Awards (2014-16). She continues to work as Business Advisor for Help Musicians, guiding musicians on the business and management of their careers.

In 2020, Julia was the Principal Investigator for a research project investigating the monetisation of live-streaming music events. The research was funded by the ESRC, as part of UKRI’s rapid response to COVID-19, with partners including the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM), the Musicians’ Union, and the Music Venue Trust. The outcome of the project is a 20,000 word Open Access report for musicians, featuring best practice guidelines (https://livestreamingmusic.uk/).

Julia is the co-editor of the book The Classical Music Industry, a collection of chapters written by scholars and industry professionals (Routledge, 2018), which included her text on classical music events in non-traditional venues. Most recently, her chapter on livestreaming classical music events was published in the book Music’s Roles and Functions in the Digital Era (Rombach, 2025).

Julia studied at King’s College London, obtaining a BMus and an MMus, while moonlighting for the BBC World Service as Producer for a cultural news programme.
