Catherine Nippe BA MA

Catherine is a designer and educator specializing in the field of editorial design and typography, with a focus on broader concerns of cultural production and visual languages.

She completed a BA (Hons) at the University of Portsmouth in 2003 and an MA in Communication Design at Central Saint Martins in 2005. Her MA work centered around type and language in print, exploring translations for the screen and seamlessly integrating editorial design with motion graphics.

Catherine's creative practice predominantly centers around editorial design for art, fashion, and cultural institutions. Operating as a micro studio, she engages directly with clients. Noteworthy recent collaborations include The Arts Council Collection, Emma Biggs and Mathew Collings, Finnland Institute Germany, and Mark + Fold. From 2007–2019, Catherine held the position of senior lecturer in Typography at the Angewandte in Vienna.

Between 2006–2012, she was invited as a sessional lecturer at Portsmouth University. She also maintained a regular teaching presence at Bristol University and delivered talks at Rochester University and the Design Museum. In 2012, she joined Ravensbourne’s BA Graphic Design course, where she now teaches as a senior lecturer across all year groups. Growing up in Germany and Denmark to a Swiss mother and German father, Catherine moved to the UK in 2003.
