Areej Fatima BSc, MSc

Areej Fatima is a lecturer in computing, a researcher, and an AI and automation practitioner with experience across higher education and the technology industry.

She holds a Master’s degree with Distinction in Computer Science and Technology from Ulster University and has professional experience in robotic process automation (RPA), intelligent systems, software engineering, low-code development, and AI-enabled automation. She also holds professional certifications in Advanced Automation (Automation Anywhere 360) and Mendix Development.

Prior to progressing into academia, Areej worked as a Robotic Automation Developer, designing and implementing automation solutions for real-world business processes. Her industry background directly informs her teaching and research, enabling her to connect theoretical computing concepts with practical applications in automation, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation.

She has taught across UK higher education institutions, delivering modules in computer science, software engineering, programming, databases, cloud technologies, automation, and emerging digital technologies. Her academic practice focuses on applied learning, student engagement, and preparing learners for rapidly evolving careers in technology.

Areej actively conducts research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, automation, intelligent systems, explainable AI, and agentic AI. Her work explores the practical application of emerging technologies to real-world problems, with a particular focus on intelligent automation, AI-enabled decision support, human-in-the-loop systems, and the responsible use of AI. She has also published research on robotic process automation and machine learning through the IEEE.

Her wider professional interests include agentic AI, AI-enabled automation, low-code development, software engineering, digital transformation, and innovative approaches to computing education and professional practice.
