Zodiac - closing titles for Aries (1966)

Concept and creative process

'Zodiac' was a monthly themed arts entertainment series based on the ascendant astrological sign of the month. These endtitles were for Aries, which featured an original television ballet 'Time Switch' and 'Act Without Words II', a mime by Samuel Beckett, performed by Julian Chagrin. A large lens in front of the rostrum camera was used to distort the ‘Zodiac’ logo and the typography for the credits as they panned through the screen to pre-arranged timings taken from the music. On a second pass the clear titles were superimposed in the top half of the screen and revealed sequentially to the same timings by uncovering the white on black captions. This resulted in the synchronisation of the distorted images of the titles and the clean titles to create the endcredit sequence of the programme and a fitting conclusion to the arts programme.
