Young Musician of the Year - animated version (1987)

Concept and creative process

Humphrey Burton introduced this most sought-after and respected music competition. Top young instrumentalists from all over the country competed within the four genres of Wind, String, Brass and Piano, before the overall winner was announced. The final was held in the presence of HRH Duchess of Kent and was a very important date in the music calendar. I was commissioned to create a new sequence for the 1987 series of ‘Young Musician’. I decided on a completely animated approach, designed to a totally new music track. It was necessary to retain the typography in order to tie in with the existing marketing material. The feeling of avant-garde and abstract came to mind, whilst still depicting the four genres of wind, brass, piano and strings.

Animation - Chris Tucker.

Graphic Design and Art Direction – Liz Friedman.
