Theatre 625 - Parade's End (1964)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘Parade’s End’, an episode of ‘Theatre 625’, a drama anthology series transmitted on BBC Two from 1964 to 1968. It was a play about an idealist for whom even peacetime is far from pacific and starred Judi Dench and Ronald Hines. The title sequence was composed of black and white stills and cut-out portrait heads, mounted on cels. These were combined with an animated rotating background or panning backgrounds of a monochrome outline Union Flag. The sequence was filmed entirely on a rostrum camera and captured in-camera without the need for additional editing.
