Talkback (1971)

Concept and creative process

‘Talkback’ was a long-running series which gave viewers a platform on which to air their views on BBC programmes and the issues they raised. This edition, presented by Michael Barratt, focused on the BBC’s sex education films for eight-to-nine-year-old children, and invited parents and teachers to question representatives from the BBC and the Schools Broadcasting Council. The titles for the programme consisted of a montage of close-ups of viewers’ letters, parts of which mixed or jumped on.  They were vignetted by an enveloping shape derived from the two inverted commas which finally animated apart to reveal the programme title ‘Talkback’. The sequence was filmed on a rostrum camera.
