Strange Landscape (1995)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series in which Christopher Frayling investigates the art and philosophy of the Middle Ages. The sequence draws on the iconography of the Middle Ages – fantastic beasts, religious figures, conflicts and the Green Man, seen in a remarkable model animation at the start of the sequence, materialising out of the trunk of a tree. The medieval icons are layered in post-production and animated floating among the trees in a continuous panning shot. The end point of the sequence, the city in the landscape is animated to resemble an illustration from a medieval illuminated manuscript, bearing the programme title and subtitle.
