South of the Border (1990)

Concept and creative process

Set in the south of London this title sequence for a private detective series was shot on 35mm film and optically composited digitally. The shot of the actor’s feet pounding the pavement was shot in chroma key on a tread mill. The close-up tracking shots of pavements were inspired by the art works of the Boyle family. They were shot in 35mm on a fisher dolly that was gripped at a consistent pace to match to a person walking. The components were composited digitally to create an optical quality and the reticulated textures were also enhanced during this process.
