Six Fifty-Five Special (1981)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a series of live summer entertainment including interviews, music and guests. The opening of the sequence was filmed on a rostrum camera using a clear on black Kodalith negative, backlit with a coloured gel. This was masked progressively by a black animated matte sequence. The film in the camera was rewound to zero and the negative of the previous matte sequence was used to mask what had been filmed so far and to expose a white on black caption of the word ‘Six’ on the rostrum camera table. When fully revealed, the ‘Six’ jump cut between negative and positive images a couple of times, before cutting to a black ‘Six’ on a white background. This was in fact the first frame of an animated sequence of the programme title ‘Six Fifty Five’ revolving on a block, with the name on each facet. This cel animation was filmed one frame at a time while the camera tracked out from a close-up on the ‘Six” to the wide-shot of the complete title. The final component of the title, the word ‘Special’ in a script font on a backlit coloured Kodalith, was inserted also using positive and negative mattes to enable it to write itself on over the final frames of the hold on ‘Six Fifty Five’.
