Sherlock Holmes - A Study in Scarlet (1968)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a drama adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel ‘A Study in Scarlet’ in which Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson first made their appearance. The title is taken from a quote by Holmes: “the finest study I ever came across... the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life”. The titles were simple white on black superimpositions shot on a rostrum camera and superimposed over specially shot scenes from the production.
