Secrets and Lies (2003)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a documentary series which revealed the secrets of the success of celebrities. The title sequence divided into a generic section and a topic-specific section. In this programme the topic was ‘Parenthood’, and shots of loving couples and babies were shown in a series of sliding split screens on a black background. The generic title animated 180 degrees in a digital edit of lines of overlapping coloured screens and images and a maze of key words such as ‘perception’, ‘fame’, 'power', 'ambition' and 'religion', ending with ‘Secrets and Lies’. The topic section had the word ‘Parenthood’ revolve in with the screens to the centre, accompanied by scrolling lists and key words associated with it. It was an info-graphics style of layering that became prevalent with the available technology at the time and was applied equally to other areas such as sports programmes.
