Ripping Yarns (1977)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a post-Python comedy from the Michael Palin and Terry Jones partnership, with Palin as the lead in a range of wacky stories that parody tales of derring-do and northern life. Iain Hewett drew on the 19th century ‘Boy’s Own’ style of illustration for his titles, depicting heroics, sporting prowess and war stories in a series of illustrations and created a mock-up ‘Boy’s Own’ Annual bearing the programme title to complete the sequence.
