Review (1969)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a weekly arts magazine ‘Review’, presented by James Mossman. The title was made as a three-dimensional model of the letters of the word ‘REVIEW’. A sheet of white latex rubber was placed over the letters on a suction table and the air was extracted. This action revealed the letters in sharp relief. The process was repeated with close-ups of the individual letters and with the whole word, creating a stack as the final image. Charles McGhie also used this same technique in the titles for ‘Out of the Unknown’ in the same year, and more extensively a decade later in his titles for Jonathan Miller's series 'The Body in Question'.
