The Really Wild Show (2001)

Concept and creative process

The opening titles for ‘The Really Wild Show’, a children's wildlife programme with reports from across the world. The concept for the sequence was wild animals in motion, abstracted to the key essentials to describe the shape and movement in silhouette. Live action clips of the animals were traced and rendered as black shapes on animation paper and scanned into a Quantel Henry and keyed over different brightly-coloured plain backgrounds. Further layers were composited at intervals, such as white geometric shapes and number sequences and the black concentric circles which ultimately framed the title logo. The editing and compositing of the elements kept everything constantly on the move through sudden changes of scale, position and focus, tightly choreographed to the beat and jungle sounds of the soundtrack.
