Play for Today: The Largest Theatre in the World: The Lie (1970)

Concept and creative process

'The Largest Theatre in the World' was a television drama series produced simultaneously in different countries under the aegis of the European Broadcasting Union. These are the titles for the BBC's contribution to the project, shown in the UK in the 'Play for Today' slot. 'The Lie' was the first British television play by Ingmar Bergman, Sweden's best-known film director-writer. The play’s theme was symbolised by a head-on collision between two bulls, filmed on the rostrum camera using cut-out artwork hand animated under the camera.
