Parkinson (1998)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for the long-running talk show, in which Michael Parkinson conversed with a series of celebrity guests. A mosaic of tonally manipulated monochrome portraits of past guest celebrities was created as a 2D computer animation which panned and tracked to a wide shot. A cut to an upside-down view of the mosaic cued a spiralling zoom out to an extremely wide shot, in which each celebrity portrait became a pixel in a portrait of Parkinson, before mixing through to a fully framed monochrome portrait of the host with a new logo beneath. The 2D computer animation was created by Chris Fynes, former BBC designer turned computer programmer at his company Infynity.
