Parents And Children (1977)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for the series ‘Parents and Children’, looking at the emotional and physical experience of pregnancy and the first weeks of life. In a stills montage filmed on a rostrum camera, the title sequence reprised the cycle of prenatal development from fertilisation of the egg, to embryo, to the fully formed foetus in utero, ending with the new-born baby and parents. Superimposed over the montage was an animated curved white line which encircled each image in turn, finally emerging to encompass the whole family before becoming the oval frame of the programme title.
