Outbreak of Murder (1962)

Concept and creative process

‘Outbreak of Murder’ was a weekly thriller by Edward J. Mason and Ted Willis. This version of the titles is mute. The designer’s approach to the brief was to design a logo consisting of the letters O and M, which also resembled the head and upper torso of a figure when stacked one on the other. The logo is used as a typographic ornament alongside the type chosen for the actors’ credits and to transition to the drama’s maintitle. Finally the logo is stamped all over the screen directly under the rostrum camera, symbolically suggesting the idea of an outbreak which spreads all over the screen in different shades of grey. A simple rostrum camera shoot captured in-camera with no editing necessary.
