The Old Curiosity Shop (1979)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a drama adaptation of the novel by Charles Dickens. Little Nell and her grandfather are harried by the odious, misshapen Quilp who plans to marry Little Nell when she is older. For the titles, a vignette was formed by a single composite illustration of characters from ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, drawn in a style reminiscent of Phiz, the most best known of all Dickens illustrators. The artwork was filmed on a rostrum camera, with clear acetate overlays of the black title lettering.
