Oil On Canvas (1997)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for ‘Oil on Canvas’, a series in which contemporary artists shared their art skills. The sequence, made at The Moving Picture Company, was given a deliberate ‘hand-made’ feel, while using the latest digital technology of the late 1990s to bring it to the screen. Random marks in coloured paint were scanned in digital post-production and were combined in layers with each other in a sequence of continuous dissolves. Hand-painted words were introduced subliminally into the visual mix towards the end of the sequence, resolving into the ‘Oil On Canvas’ programme title as the art action came to a stop.
