Mother Love (1989)

Concept and creative process

A title sequence for ‘Mother Love’, a four-part drama written by Andrew Davies for which he won a BAFTA in 1989. Images of the developmental stages from egg to embryo to baby and finally toddler are reflected in an extreme close-up of the eye of Diana Rigg, who played the title role for which she too won BAFTA Best Actress Award in 1989. The camera tracks back from her eye to a mid-shot portrait of the mother and child. An intriguing opener for the drama concerned with a mother's obsessive love for her son and hatred of his father.
