Middlemarch (1994)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for an adaptation of the George Eliot novel set at the cusp of the Industrial Revolution, chronicling the lives of the people inhabiting the fictional English town of Middlemarch. The elegant typographic titles are wiped in and out with a soft edged diagonal wipe. The production footage that follows is a montage framed in close-ups of the counter shapes of the 3-dimensional 'M' of the 'Middlemarch' logo. It dissolves through to a textured background, which zooms back to reveal the programme title as if carved from stone. This in turn dissolves to an airbrushed effect in the centre of the textured background for the remaining credits.
