Lulu (1975)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for an entertainment and music series hosted by the singer Lulu, with special guests. Maurice Binder, better known for his work on early James Bond film titles than TV work, was commissioned to make the titles for ‘Lulu’. His signature style of silhouetted naked women was discreetly employed here too, a constant presence in the uprights of the ‘L’s, while Lulu herself was filmed dancing fully clothed in the solid shapes of the ‘U’s. Mattes of the outline letters of the title were animated and filmed on a rostrum camera, and combined in a film optical with the stock footage and the live action of Lulu dancing.
