The Little and Large Show (1982)

Concept and creative process

This was my second commission from executive producer Michael Hurll. ‘Little and Large’, starred Sid Little and Eddie Large, a comedy duo at the height of their popularity in the 1980s, after getting their big break in 1971 by winning ITV's talent show 'Opportunity Knocks'. For the titles, Michael Hurll’s obsession with stars on Light Entertainment programme titles was the inspiration. I thought ‘if you want stars, I’ll give you stars’. The whole sequence was created using stars with colours inspired by a packet of Smarties. There was further inspiration from my childhood. I had always been fascinated by the Andy Pandy titles, when the play blocks rolled over to reveal the title letters. So I revealed the title words from stars and Michael Hurll loved it. It was a simple rostrum camera shoot using backlit Kodaliths with coloured gels. Additional techniques included star filters, flares and scanning. The sequence was filmed on a rostrum camera at Trevor Bond Associates.
