Ken Hom's Chinese Cookery (1984)

Concept and creative process

An eight-part series introducing the classic techniques of Chinese cooking. The production were keen to use live action shots from the programme itself within the sequence. A graphic device seemed the obvious way to accommodate this. Computer animated wire frame artwork was produced at Middlesex University by John Vince. This was transposed to clear on black Kodaliths photographically. Coloured gels were placed behind the liths, which were back-lit and shot on a 35mm rostrum camera using the stop frame process. A matte was created for the centre of the wok in order to drop in the live action sequence which was edited with the graphic design editor.
