Juke Box Jury (1990)

Concept and creative process

Titles for the series in which host Jools Holland asked a panel whether the latest pop releases could be hits or misses. A live action shoot in which twelve young people of mixed demography were filmed as the jury reacting to music videos. The film was treated in telecine to drain the natural colour from the shot and leave only one coloured element such as lipstick, nail varnish, eye makeup or a bracelet in enhanced colour. The camera pulled back from the jury to reveal that they were seated inside an old juke box, which in turn receded to bring in the maintitle in a flash of colour.
