Jackanory Writing Competition (1978)

Concept and creative process

The ‘Jackanory Writing Competition’ was an annual event broadcast in December featuring the winning stories, songs and poems entered by the child audience and hosted by Kenneth Williams with guest presenters. It had a unique opening title sequence, which was curiously unrelated visually to the show which had fostered it. The design featured a chunky logotype of the name ‘Jackanory’ mounted above a decorative panel on which the title ‘Writing Competition’ was animated. The artwork was shot on a rostrum camera with the ripple effect created by mixing from the final animation frame to the same image seen through a piece of panning ripple glass.
