The Hollywood Greats - Edward G Robinson (1979)

Concept and creative process

Barry Norman presents a third series of ‘Hollywood Greats’ profiling the lives and work of more Hollywood stars. The format of the titles is identical to the earlier series, an animated sequence revealing the portraits of the stars, their names, the programme title and presenter, with a camera track in on the portrait of the subject of the programme. The sequence was designed by Richard Markell. The portraits were drawn by Tom Brooks and photographed on a turntable to create the artwork for the animated revolves. Clive Piercey cut out the photographs and stuck them onto registered cels to create the animation artwork (24 cels for each one) and filmed them on a rostrum camera.
