Heart of the Matter (1994)

Concept and creative process

Following the positive response to the new ‘Everyman’ identity, BBC Religion commissioned the BBC Resources broadcast design team in Manchester to produce a new title sequence and on-screen identity for the debate series ‘The Heart of the Matter’. Presented by journalist Joan Bakewell, the series investigated the ethical dilemmas that lay behind the issues of the day. Designer Gregory Millar’s concept for the title sequence combined a moving background of defocused silhouetted walking figures with an edit of video clips of the kind of human news stories likely to be debated on the programme. The strong visual edit was complemented by the powerfully evocative ‘Heart of the Matter’ theme music. The sequence was edited and post-produced on Quantel Harry at 4:2:2 in Manchester.
