The Good Life (1976)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘The Good Life’, a sitcom starring Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal as the Goods and Penelope Keith and Paul Eddington as the Leadbetters, the next door neighbours. Despite the ideological differences between the two couples and their contrasting lifestyles, a friendship developed and grew between them, but was not without its tensions. The animated title sequence took the flower as a symbol of the good life that the Goods aspired to in their quest for a completely self-sufficient existence in suburbia. The fact that the flower’s petals dropped was a hint that the course of the good life does not necessarily always run as smoothly as anticipated. The artwork was filmed on a rostrum camera.
