French and Saunders (1987)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a sketch comedy series written by and starring Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Designer Paul D’Auria created an appropriately amusing 3D CGI typographic animation for the opener using their two surnames, with French trying unsuccessfully to get in on the act and being constantly upstaged by Saunders. The movie background to the animation was the 1953 ‘Potter’s Wheel’ BBC Interlude, which was probably the best remembered of all the interludes that the BBC produced to cover gaps in programming, technical breakdowns and studio changes.
