Faith To Faith (1993)

Concept and creative process

The opening titles for ‘Faith to Faith’, a series of documentary programmes that looked at how people of different religions respond to each other. The sequence was produced on a shoestring budget. Louise Byrne was commissioned by designer Yasmeen Farooqui to make three-dimensional letters from the design she produced. Louise modelled them in raku clay and fired them in a raku kiln  with a copper-type glaze. A film rostrum shoot created the moves on the type and Yasmeen composited the sequence partly on a Quantel ‘Harriet’ (which was capable of only storing 13 seconds of data at a time!) and finished the top layer as an in-house videotape edit at BBC Manchester where she was based.
