Disabled Lives (1992)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a documentary series understanding disablity and the limitless possibilities of wheel powered freedom.

"A sensitive opening title was required for this series on understanding disability, and the limitless possibilities of wheel powered freedom. Originally named ‘Labelled Disabled’, my initial ideas felt obvious with speeding wheelchairs and barriers. A simpler cinematic approach developed in close collaboration with the director Tim Lambert in the edit. The arc of a spoked wheel formed the visual metaphor of global freedom to create a simple, yet powerful opening. This was viscerally enhanced  by an ethereal soundtrack which concluded with a breath-giving exaltation. The rotating bicycle wheel was shot against white, to luminance key a circle which encapsulated our video of various activities. The camera tracks the circumference, climaxing with an illuminating glow to bring on the elegant ‘Disabled Lives’ typography. Much credit goes to the client, director Tim Lambert, who helped steer the creative idea towards clarity and simplicity. I learned much from his understated film-making approach, which resulted in a more timeless graphic statement."
