Dancers (1995)

Concept and creative process

The producer wanted a sensual title sequence for this drama series, as this wasn't a classical Royal Ballet performance, but a drama about real people and their lives. I commissioned a female dancer to perform a series of moves to be shot in close up, so we could concentrate on the movement of the body rather than the actual performance. I created artwork of the word 'dancers' by pasting strips of the word onto paper and photographing this to make a black on white 35mm slide. This was then projected onto the dancer at the live action shoot and became the light source for the 35mm film shoot itself. The live action footage was cut together on a Steenbeck in the edit suite and sent off to the labs for a transmission print.
