Cakes and Ale (1974)

Concept and creative process

The opening titles for a three-part dramatisation of the novel by W. Somerset Maugham began with ‘THE BBC2 SERIAL’ generic identity for the strand. It was followed by the titles for the drama, a series of ornate typographic captions. Each one had a vignette cut-out within the counter of an enlarged capital letter. Each vignette was designed to contain a different frozen frame of the female lead riding a bicycle. The same device linked through to the studio.
