Concept and creative process
Titles for the classic teen drama set on Tyneside, about a group of young people who frequented the Byker Grove Youth Centre. It ran from 1989 to 2006 and launched the careers of many of the young actors, notably Ant and Dec. The design for the title sequence comprised an abstract mosaic background to the programme logo, the two words of which individually expanded and contracted again in synch with the shouts of “BYKER” and “GROVE” on the soundtrack. A letterbox shape above the logo allowed the simultaneous introduction of live cut-out clips of cast members to be animated in over changing location shots. The complex compilation was made on a Quantel HAL.
