BBC World Service Weather (1991)

Concept and creative process

This sequence was designed in 1991 as a sample compilation of the weather symbols and layouts and was made for a conference presentation, hence the rendition by Ella Fitzgerald of Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler’s 1933 classic ‘Stormy Weather’, which is the accompanying soundtrack. BBC World Service Television started in 1991. The weather maps were redesigned to show the surface topography of the earth. These were all made from a series of photographs of a white painted plaster model of the world in plate carrée projection and then coloured using Quantel paintbox.
