The Aphrodite Inheritance (1979)

Concept and creative process

Title sequence for ‘The Aphrodite Inheritance’, a drama set in Cyprus about a man who has to investigate the death of his brother and who is drawn into a bizarre conspiracy. Filmed as a model shoot by Stefan Pstrowski, it depicts a selection of statues and columns from antiquity, which are later revealed to be the chess pieces on a board, on which a game is being prepared by two female hands. The final shot sees the pieces lined up and ready to play with a long-stemmed red rose lying between the serried ranks.
