Angels (1979)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for the long-running twice weekly soap about life inside and outside of the hospital for a group of nurses at St Angela’s. A musically synched oscilloscope drove the sequence of new wave computer graphics. The oscilloscope was traditional animation by Hibbert Ralph and filmed with back-lit lighting effects on a rostrum camera. A back-lit grid was also filmed slit-can on the rostrum and created the framework for ‘patchwork’ wipes introducing the vignettes of hospital life, the characters and finally the St Angela’s Hospital heraldic shield. The ‘Angels’ logo was burned in as part of the oscilloscope animation.
