All About Books (1980)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘All About Books’, a series of programmes about books and authors, hosted by Russell Harty. Designer Glenn Carwithen took his cue for the title sequence from the specially written title song lyrics which proved to be a good subject for visual interpretation. Stills sequences, shot initially with a motorised 35mm stills camera, were re-filmed on a rostrum camera with mixes to create stylised motion sequences which became the background layer of a multi-plane animation set-up. Cut-out illustrations and photographs were hand animated stop-frame under the rostrum camera and matted over the background layer. The layers were combined in-camera, with the animated page turns bookending the sequence with the programme title and a drawing of the host.
