Alberto Villanueva BA (Hons) MArch MA (Distinction) PGCE FHEA

Biography

After completing master’s studies in architecture and environment design in Madrid and London, Alberto started his own practice, IDEA architecture office. 

His expertise covers technical and innovative concepts applied to creative industries. In September 2017, he was appointed Spanish Ambassador for Science in the UK, combining diplomacy with science and technology.

His practice specialises in singular buildings, interdisciplinary research, and consultancy in design, technology and human interaction. He understands the needs of industry and education; teaming up public and private sector organisations with academia to co-create pioneering new prototypes that respond to everyday needs.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of his practice, Alberto has covered different subjects in academia. He has coordinated the successful Postgraduate Mentoring Programme, delivered dissertation tutorials for Contextual Studies and Professional Practice for undergraduate and postgraduate students at Ravensbourne.

He is also a visiting lecturer at various universities in Spain and a mentor and fellow of the Society of Spanish Researchers in the UK (SRUK).

In addition, he has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning for Creative Courses in 2018 at Ravensbourne University London.

Research

His academic work and research has included sites like Spain, South Korea, China, Slovenia, Italy, France, EAU, United States and even the planet Mars!

The latest, Mars UTOPIA, researched the possibilities of 3D printers and new materials in the colonisation of planet Mars, as a solution to generate architectures in extreme environments. The project has been noted by The Royal Academy of Arts and featured by Dezeen, Designboom or Archdaily, among other renowned publications and has been recently exhibited in Madrid by the Telefónica Foundation.

In addition, he has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning for Creative Courses in 2018 at Ravensbourne University London.
